My love of model boats started very young when a friend of my granddads called Mr Pope who lived across the road to them gave me the hull of a motor launch which was about two foot long. At the time I thought it was great being under ten and I pushed it around on the carpet for hours, but at the time didn’t really understand what this guy did, but I now know he built boats as in hulls and steam engines and boilers all from scratch and stuff he had laying around.
As I got older I found you could add radio control gear and make it work properly, and from there my love of making boats and sitting by tranquil bits of water playing with them took off. Out of all my rc models, I think boats are my real favourite, as how can you beat a nice sunny afternoon by a lake listening to the water sloshing and rippling as the boat moves round, while being warmed by the sun.
So as I have got older tech stuff has moved on and where once I made everything by hand, (I still enjoy doing that,) now there is 3d printing and injection moulding, both which open up a whole new world of making parts. Below is some of the parts I have made for my models, most are 1:20th as that is my preferred scale as it offers far more what I call visible detail when on the pond, and will be adding more parts, as I find the moulds out, but on getting into 1:14th scale trucks, I feel the need creeping in for a boat to go on a trailer, so soon there will be 1:14 parts as well.
